A collection of the most popular German A1 coursebooks used by language centres for teaching.

Below are the widely used German coursebooks — you can download the soft copies to use. Each coursebook has its own strengths and weaknesses, but together they give you the foundation to progress to higher levels, and they can also be used to prepare for popular German certificates such as Goethe or Telc.

I. MENSCHEN

Known as the most popular German coursebook used by language centres. One drawback is its high price, so learners often use photocopies. Beginners can download the A1 set. Note: a level may be split further into A1.1 and A1.2 rather than a single A1.

II. STUDIO 21

The second most popular German coursebook after Menschen, also widely used and hard to buy as an original — complete, high-quality soft copies with full audio are available.

III. SCHRITTE PLUS NEU

A third well-known series; it is the reissue of the older set previously named Schritte International.
